Lesson #4 - Academic Vocabulary and Pre-Art Activities:
VOCABULARY Texture: Texture is the way something feels when you touch it. Texture can also be something we see in works of art.
THINK and DO Activity: Touch your hair - what does it feel like? Soft? Curly? Smooth? Spiky? These are all texture words.
What other texture words can you think of? What kind of texture do you want to create today?
Lesson #4 - Make Art:
Step #1: Open the cereal or cracker box. Cut the sides of the box apart on the folds. Cut off any sides or pieces that have glue.
Step #2: Select one large piece of board and get your glue ready.
Step #3: Use your glue. Draw any types of lines and shapes you like. When the glue dries, it will have created a texture.
Step #4: You have created a texture plate. Let it dry and save them for Lesson #5.
Lesson #4 - Follow-up Questions: What types of lines and shapes do you see? What kind of texture do you think this will create?
Note: Once you complete Lesson #4 and your texture plate has dried, you are ready for Lesson #5.
Lesson #5:
MATERIALS: You will need....
the texture plate you created in Lesson #4
paper
peeled crayons or oil pastels
glue, framing paper, scissors (optional)
Lesson #5: Academic Vocabulary and Pre-Art Activities
VOCABULARY
In Lesson #4, we created a texture plate.
Today we are going to create a rubbing of the texture.
Rubbing: A rubbing is like a copy of something. By placing our texture plate under a piece of paper and rubbing it with the side of a crayon or oil pastel, we will get a copy of the texture we created with glue.
THINK AND DO
Activity: Get your texture plate ready. Close your eyes and rub your hand over the dried glue. What does it feel like? What do you think the rubbing of the texture plate will look like? What colors will you use?
Lesson #5 - Make Art:
Step #1: Get your texture plate and paper ready. Decide which colors you want to use.
Step #2: Slide the texture plate under the paper. Rub the side of the peeled crayon or oil pastel on top of the paper and texture plate.
I used black and the primary colors (red, yellow and blue). It's okay for your colors to touch and overlap.
Step #3: You can make many texture rubbings. You can also frame one by cutting it out and gluing it on another piece of paper!
Lesson #3 - Follow-up Questions:
Think about the process of creating your artwork.
You used glue to create a texture plate.
What other materials might you use to create a texture plate?
