Collage and Weaving
Note: Lesson #2 and Lesson #3 come together to create one project.
Choice #1 - Collage:
VOCABULARY A collage is a work of art made by cutting or tearing pieces of paper and then gluing them together. I choose to create a collage!
Follow the directions below on the left. Lesson #3 - Make Art (Collage):
Step #1 - Collage: Get out your collage materials (magazines, advertisements, wrapping paper, newspaper, etc.). Start tearing and cutting shapes you think are interesting.
|
Choice #2 -Weaving:
VOCABULARY A weaving is made by using strips of paper or fabric and overlapping them in a pattern to create a work of art. I choose to create a weaving!
Follow the directions below on the right. Lesson #3 - Make Art (Weaving):
Step #1 - Weaving: Get the colored background from Lesson #2 and a pencil or crayon. Turn your colored paper the tall way. Flip it over to the back.
On the back of the colored paper, copy what you see in one of the pictures below. Note: Fewer straight lines are less challenging. More curvy lines are more challenging. Cut the lines until you get to the STOP section at the top. |
Step #2 - Collage: Once you have many shapes torn and cut, start arranging them on the colored background from Lesson #2.
Step #3 - Collage: Keep moving the pieces around until you like what you see. You might try overlapping shapes (this means putting one shape on top of another so the shapes touch).
Step #4 - Collage: When you have decided which collage shapes to use and where you will glue them, turn one piece over at a time and add small drops of glue.
Turn the piece with the glue over and place it where you want it to stay. You might need some help gluing the overlapping shapes! Lesson #3 (Collage) - Follow-up Questions:
Think about your collage. How does it make you feel? Does it remind you of anything? Can you think of a title you might give your work? Why did you choose this title? |
Step #2 - Weaving: Cut your collage materials into strips of paper.
Make sure the strips of paper can fit all the way across the colored background from side to side. Step #3 - Weaving: Choose a strip of paper. Weave it under and over, under and over.
Slide the strip of paper up to the top. Weave strips of paper until the weaving is done. Step #4 - Weaving: Place a dot of glue under the ends of the strips of paper to hold them in place.

Lesson #3 (Weaving) - Follow-up Questions: Think about your weaving. How did it feel to cut your colored background? Was weaving challenging? Why? How are your weaving paper strips and your colored drawing different? |
