VOCABULARY Texture: Texture is the way something feels when you touch it. Texture can also be something we see in works of art.
Three-dimensional:Something that isn't flat, something that pops up.
THINK and DO Activity: Touch your hair - what does it feel like? Soft? Curly? Smooth? Spiky? These are all texture words.
What other texture words can you think of? What kind of texture do you want to create today?
Make Art: Step #1: Open up the bag. (Don't worry if you tear some of it.)
Step #2: Cut a section of the bag that will be the surface you will glue things on. It doesn't have to be square and it can be any size you want. I suggest keeping it smaller than 10 by 10 inches though. AND
Step #3: Cut up the leftover bag into smaller pieces.
Step #4: Now it is time to investigate and experiment. Create 3-5 different shapes - you can bend them, fold them, twist them, or crumple them. You might also come up with your own idea!
I created 4 different ideas.
Step #5: Choose one of the shapes you think will make for interesting texture and cut out as many of these shapes as you can. We will call these modular shapes.
Step #6: Apply a small dot of glue to the back of each shape.
Step #7: Turn the shape over. Position in place and hold - remember, you will want the shapes to pop up and be three-dimensional. Count to 10 or 20 while the glue starts to dry.
Step #8: Continue adding the pieces until you have the completed texture.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT AS YOU CREATE:
Will the shapes touch each other? Will the shapes extend off the edges of the surface? Where will you put the glue on each shape? Will the writing on the bag show or not?
Follow-up Questions:
How would you describe the texture of my example above? What do you think it feels like?
How would you describe the texture of the artwork you made?
